The Ramshorn

 

The Ramshorn is a former church on Ingram Street in Glasgow and is home to Scotland’s National Centre for Languages and the Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools, both centres within the University of Strathclyde. It was originally built as St David’s Parish Church in 1824, replacing a church that had stood on the site since 1720. Many prominent Glaswegians are buried in the surrounding cemetery, including industrialist David Dale, and tobacco merchants Andrew Buchanan and John Glassford.

 Of the 115,000 postboxes across the UK, more than half are EIIR (Queen Elizabeth II) and 15% are GR (King George VI) - see June 26th. Only 6% are VR (Queen Victoria). Fewer still are EVIIR (Edward VII) and very rare are EVIIIR (Edward VIII) - there are only 171 from his short reign in 1936.

Wee Annie is considered to be a brother to Bobby Wemyss (see February 1st). Designed by the same artist, Angela Hunter, she’s sitting on a suitcase looking out towards Gourock train station and ferry terminal and is aptly called “Girl on a Suitcase”.
